Snake-bite season starts in May when snakes forage for food and begin to mate and ends in October, when hibernation season starts. Dogs may be particularly at risk, because dogs that haven't seen snakes before tend to approach the reptiles face first, said veterinarian Briana Travis, who treats about four canine snake-bite victims each month. If a bite occurs, stay calm, try and notice details about what the snake looks like and seek medical attention immediately, experts advise.
