Mildly depressed patients with hepatitis C virus who begin interferon-based antiviral therapy could see their depression symptoms worsen, which may make it more likely they will discontinue treatment, researchers reported in the American Journal of Gastroenterology. The study team from the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System and Stanford University also found that 53% of minimally depressed patients did not achieve a sustained virologic response to treatment, compared with those who were mildly or moderately depressed.
