Republican members of the House Armed Services Committee this week asked the Defense Department to delay lifting the ban on openly gay troops, arguing in a letter that Congress has not had time to review information about the readiness of the armed services to end the "don't
ask, don't tell" policy. But a DOD spokesman dismissed that possibility, saying, "The repeal
of 'don't ask don't tell' will occur, in accordance with the law and after a rigorous certification
process, on Sept. 20."
