Obese pregnant women with gestational diabetes mellitus were almost twice as likely as their leaner counterparts to have upregulated endothelial lipase expression in the placenta, according to a study in Diabetes. However, neither obesity nor gestational diabetes alone were linked to EL expression in pregnancy. A combination of obesity and gestational diabetes during pregnancy was also associated with elevated levels of insulin and leptin and a slight increase in glucose and tumor necrosis factor-alpha, the researchers said.
