A fire that ravaged Fourmile Canyon in Colorado has given researchers an opportunity to gather valuable data. For example, research by Dan Lack of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration shows the relationship between oil content in smoke and heat absorption, which could have implications for global warming research. The region has experienced other major fires, said Meredith Gartner, a doctoral student at the University of Colorado who, along with geography professor Thomas Veblen and the CU Museum of Natural History, created an exhibit explaining how fire fits into the ecology of the area.
