A new diarrheal syndrome called cord colitis syndrome was identified in 11 of 104 patients who underwent cord-blood hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, according to a study in the New England Journal of Medicine. Patients who underwent allogeneic peripheral-blood or bone marrow hematopoietic stem cell transplant did not exhibit signs of the syndrome, leading researchers to conclude that the syndrome is strictly related to cord-blood stem cells. It is important to differentiate the syndrome from graft-versus-host disease because the treatments for the two differ.
