Coughing cats that also have difficulty breathing on occasion may have asthma, an inflammatory response in the lungs to allergens that can be exacerbated by secondary bacterial infections. Veterinarian Jeff Kahler explains that diagnostic tests including a thorough physical exam and chest radiographs can usually diagnose the condition. Dr. Kahler notes treatment with corticosteroids can be administered several ways including injection, by mouth or even through inhaled therapy.
