Kindergarten students at the KIPP -- Knowledge is Power Program -- Empower School in Los Angeles are part of an experiment to combine computer-based learning with teacher-led instruction. School officials say the blended-learning approach allows educators to preserve time for small-group instruction and has led to high test scores in math and reading among its students, who primarily are minorities and those from low-income backgrounds. Critics of the approach, however, question whether the additional computer time is appropriate for such young students.
