Winners of a design-build contract to restore six miles of New York's Route 42 and replace two bridges plan to use precast concrete decks on the concrete and steel-deck-girder bridges. "Although the precast system is 20% to 30% more costly than the traditional cast-in-place system, it will provide better quality since the bridge decks will be built indoors in a controlled environment," said Halmar Principal Chris Larsen, adding that precast also saves on the cost of temporary heating for winter construction.
