The central line-associated bloodstream infection rate at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia dropped from 5.34 per 1,000 device days to 0.41 from 2005 to 2010 through the use of evidence-based best practices. Researchers also reported a decline of ventilator-associated pneumonia from 10 cases per 1,000 ventilator days to 1.12. The findings were presented at the Clinical Congress of the American College of Surgeons in San Francisco.
