Virginia Tech has abandoned its paper maps in favor of a GIS system to manage stadium security during football games at Lane Stadium. Using GIS layers, officials can see incidents, locate security resources and check floor plans to pinpoint hot spots and enhance safety. "Tracking our resources is a critical component to ensuring public safety during the game which enables the unified command in the Emergency Operation Center to manage each event effectively," said Vince Houston, a Virginia Tech police captain.
