Frequent exposure to hyperglycemia and severe hypoglycemia appear to affect brain development in young people with type 1 diabetes, a study in Diabetes revealed. Researchers found that patients who had more hyperglycemic events had greater reductions in whole brain gray matter, while those who had more exposure to severe hypoglycemia had lower occipital/parietal white matter volume compared with those who did not have type 1 diabetes.
