Heartworm disease threatens dogs and cats well beyond the summer months; the mosquitoes that transmit the disease breed in standing water, and there is no shortage of that in the wake of this year's hurricane season. Heartworms are treatable in dogs, but it costs about $1,000 and the medication is currently in short supply, but there is no treatment for infected cats and the American Heartworm Society points out that prevention is the best medicine for both species.
