The Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association has proposed an action plan to improve the quality of health care services and address increasing costs using its 39 plans in all U.S. states and federal territories. The plan, if implemented, would save $319 billion over the next 10 years, according to economic analyst Ken Thorpe. The Medical Imaging and Technology Alliance and Access to Medical Imaging Coalition, however, said the plan would entail the use of prior authorization for advanced imaging services under Medicare and prior authorization has not been proven yet to lower costs and improve appropriate use of imaging.
