New employees are generally on their best behavior, so it can be hard to accurately judge their performance, Jeff Haden writes. As a result, you should look for warning signs, such as employees who have trouble with punctuality or attendance and those who immediately ask for new equipment. "The employee who instantly needs a better computer, different desk, specialized software, etc., will tend to find external reasons why their performance is poor instead of looking inside themselves," he writes.
