The amount of money that utilities and other entities spend to secure the smart grid and related technologies will more than triple within four years to reach $2 billion annually by 2016, according to ABI Research. The increased capital will focus on protecting the array of interconnected elements of the smart grid, including identity management, access control systems, physical safety and infrastructure security. Spending on the protection of electric-vehicle charging stations will increase most rapidly, ABI says.
