Turkey, stuffing mix, pie crust and filling, seasonings and other ingredients often contain added salt, which can add up to a big dose of sodium at Thanksgiving dinner, experts say. "For Thanksgiving or any meal, the more you can cook from scratch and have some control over the sodium that's going in, the better," said registered dietitian Bethany Thayer of the American Dietetic Association. Some manufacturers are reducing the amount of sodium in their foods, and cooks can substitute herbs, citrus, garlic and onions in recipes that call for salt, Thayer said.
