Actin, a common protein in cells, helps expedite healing by wrapping and contracting itself around a wound in a ringlike structure, a study on the ringworm C. elegans found. On the other hand, the DAPK-1 protein appears to inhibit wound closure. Developing a drug that counters the effect of the DAPK-1 protein may help improve healing in humans, especially in patients with diabetes, experts reported in the journal Current Biology.
