Hydraulic fracturing has received unnecessary criticism, including blame for earthquakes and groundwater contamination, said Devon Energy Chairman J. Larry Nichols in congressional testimony. Fracking's economic potential is one of several reasons that the industry is invested in safe practices, Nichols said. "One, we drink the ground water, too. The second is you don't want that oil or gas you're producing to escape. That's the product. We make money by selling oil and gas. You don't want that escaping anywhere," he said.
