The Canadian Institutes of Health Research has announced its Researcher of the Year award will go to Dr. Paul Kubes of the University of Calgary. Kubes will use the five-year, $500,000 grant to continue research on how the immune system works and how it can be strengthened to better protect against infectious diseases. Kubes will also study the mechanisms involved in sepsis and endeavor to learn why the immune system can cause damage to the body after some events, such as heart attack, stroke or other brain injury, or diseases such as multiple sclerosis.
