The new method for detecting Down syndrome, called MaterniT21, isolates the fetal DNA in a mother's bloodstream and can determine whether an extra chromosome is present. The test is accurate and safer than other techniques, causing some to worry that more pregnancies of fetuses with Down syndrome will end in abortion. Some families and advocates fear a decline in people with Down syndrome will result in a decrease in resources for their community.
