State and local employee wellness plans reduce costs, according to a report by the Trust for America's Health that found Hernando, Miss., saved $130,000 and negotiated lower insurance premiums by offering health screenings and encouraging exercise. National Business Coalition on Health CEO Andrew Webber said employers see wellness as a "business imperative" and find it is less expensive to encourage healthy lifestyles than to pay medical bills for preventable diseases.
