The azficel-T technique can partially to completely improve the appearance of moderate to severe distensible depressed acne scarring, according to a study presented at the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery 2011 Annual Meeting. The technique involves extracting fibroblast cells from the patient's skin sample and injecting the collagen-producing cells into the acne scars. "This is an off-label use [that] can provide a very viable alternative to more invasive, risky methods ... for the improvement of acne scarring with potentially long-lasting results," said lead investigator Dr. Girish Munavalli, an assistant professor of dermatology at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine.
