Amended government rules that led to Medicare coverage of laparoscopic adjustable banding, a less invasive form of weight-loss surgery, helped lower costs and hospital readmission rates, researchers from the University of Washington reported. In analyzing CMS data, they found that after Medicare rules changed in 2006, lap banding accounted for more than a third of weight-loss procedures and the death rate among Medicare patients who underwent surgery declined by more than 50%.
