Prison officials in Texas are now studying ways to use Medicaid funding under the Affordable Care Act to provide coverage for its inmate population, with a projected budget shortfall of more than $100 million due to medical costs for inmates expected in the next two years. "Beginning in 2014, as a part of the new federal health care legislation, state-incarcerated offenders who are hospitalized are subject to Medicaid reimbursement back to the states," said Texas Department of Criminal Justice spokeswoman Michelle Lyons.
