Plastics are a key component of waste-to-energy programs, a proven technology that can fulfill power needs while increasing landfill diversion, writes Nickolas J. Themelis of Columbia University's Earth Engineering Center, which studied the matter along with the American Chemistry Council. "The United States needs to diversify its energy sources if we want to create a more sustainable and more competitive future. Energy recovery from waste should be part and parcel of the national energy strategy," writes Themelis.
