Authors of a paper published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences have retracted a paper that reported an association between murine leukemia virus-related viruses and chronic fatigue syndrome. The researchers said they issued the retraction because data from further studies in their lab and from other studies "do not consistently demonstrate an association between MLV and CFS." This retraction, which follows a retraction of a study from the journal Science that linked XMRV to CFS, heightens the interest in an ongoing NIH-funded study that is looking for retroviruses and other viruses in samples from patients with CFS and healthy controls.
