EBay's PayPal unit will leverage its knowledge of users' purchasing habits to launch a deals service early in the new year that targets consumers by preferences and location. Selective targeting is the key distinction between eBay's service and competitors such as Groupon, according to PayPal President Scott Thompson, who says the experience "is going to be completely different" in that "we'll only give you something that we think fits the category of unique and relevant."
