NIH researchers have developed a prototype handheld near-infrared imaging device that can be used in the immediate diagnosis of traumatic brain injuries such as hematomas. The device uses motion as an indicator for blood volume changes, according to findings published in Biomedical Optics Express. The device, once completed, has the potential for use as first-line testing method for brain injuries before turning to more expensive techniques such as CT and MRI.
