Students of the School of Architecture and the Built Environment of Singapore Polytechnic have developed a mixture of concrete and algae that can be used for "non-load bearing structures." The mixture involves no sand and is composed of 40% algae and 60% cement in its strongest incarnation. "The alkaline chemical in cement affects the skin, and breathing in too much of cement particles makes your lung harden. Wet algae reduces these harmful effects," said Athirah Rusli, one of the students who worked to develop the mixture.
