Some sponsors of 401(k) funds are offering alternative plans that include primarily index funds and exchange-traded funds, which typically cost investors less than traditional mutual funds do. The lower-cost offerings come as sponsors prepare for rules that mandate disclosure of fees. Charles Schwab Corp. on Tuesday announced a low-fee all-index 401(k) option, and says it has an ETF-focused 401(k) in the works.
