Insurance-related use of the Social Security Administration's "Death Master File" database presents challenges, says Whit Cornman of the American Council of Life Insurers. "Social Security numbers generally weren't collected [by insurers] decades ago, making matches much less reliable. In contrast, insurers tend to have up-to-date records of Social Security numbers for annuity buyers for tax reasons," Cornman says.
