U.S. District Judge Carl Barbier should hold BP, Anadarko Petroleum and Transocean responsible before trial for breaking federal pollution laws in relation to the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, lawyers for the Department of Justice said. The companies wouldn't be able to contest claims of Clean Water Act violations during the February nonjury trial if Barbier rules against them. "They have admitted they are owners. They have admitted they discharged oil into the Gulf of Mexico," Justice Department lawyer Steven O'Rourke said.
