Data on 47 overweight or obese participants showed those who drank a liter of regular cola every day for six months had 25% more fat surrounding their abdominal organs and about twice as much fat in the liver and muscle compared with those who drank other beverages. Most studies associate such increases with higher risks of type 2 diabetes, heart disease and nonalcoholic liver diseases, the lead researcher said. The findings appear in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
