Showtime is becoming a much stronger pay-network rival to HBO because of the success of "Homeland" and its other original series. "Homeland," which won the Golden Globe for best drama series, and other original programming have helped Showtime increase its subscription rolls from 13.8 million in 2005 to 21.3 million, while HBO's user base has remained steady at 28 million to 29 million. But HBO hopes to regain its momentum with six new series, including "Luck," which had its premiere Sunday.
