Proximal balloon occlusion provides better embolic protection in carotid artery stenting than filter protection devices that carry risk because they cross the lesion before the stent is placed, according to a study from the University Cardiovascular Center in Hamburg, Germany. An editorial with the study, published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, said the information refines the CAS technique but questioned whether it will change CMS reimbursement policies.
