The national panel writing education and treatment guidelines on cholesterol should abandon low-density lipoprotein targets in favor of an approach that takes overall cardiovascular risk into account, two physicians write in a letter published in the journal Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes. "What we know is that statins reduce risk, but they ought to be concentrated in people at higher risk," said Dr. Harlan Krumholz of the Yale University School of Medicine.
