A group of special-education advocates and parents of students with special needs met with White House officials last week to discuss the maintenance of high academic standards for students with disabilities amid new federal waivers from No Child Left Behind. Education officials, including Alexa Posny, assistant secretary for special education and rehabilitative services, described a strategy in which, among other things, all teachers would be trained to work with students who have disabilities, and all students with special needs would have access to effective interventions and differentiated instruction.
