Using location data for data analysis can yield major insights -- but using the tools successfully means acknowledging a learning curve, writes Daniel W. Rasmus. Geological data can pinpoint locations fairly well, but as higher-resolution data become available, algorithms must change to accommodate them. The danger, Rasmus writes, is when changes and human limitations are not recognized in the collection and analysis of such data. "The proponents of Big Data need to ensure that the users of their models understand the intricacies of trend analysis, what a trend really is, and the implications of acting on a model's recommendations," he writes.
