Green roofs can help reduce energy consumption inside buildings since they provide adequate insulation, according to research by Brad Rowe, a professor of horticulture at Michigan State University. In the winter, the vegetated roof prevents some heat loss and in the summer, it dramatically cuts down on the amount of heat that enters the building. Green roofs are more appropriate for large buildings such as warehouses and retail centers, said Rowe.
