The carbon-trading program for jet fuels has taken effect in Europe, which will affect U.S. airliners and could prove a benefit to that nation's advanced-biofuels industry, writes Kate Brandt. "To date, the challenge has been that there are no commercial scale advanced biofuel plants in the U.S. that produce drop-in jet fuel. ... Now the airlines have an incentive to purchase biofuels to avoid paying a tax every time they fly to and from Europe," Brandt writes.
