Compared with normal-weight children, the odds of missing two or more school days a month doubled for overweight children and quadrupled for obese children, according to a study in the International Journal of Obesity. The findings failed to explain the link between absenteeism and excess weight in children, but researchers said missed school days could indicate parents' mental illness or socioeconomic status. Other possible obesity-related factors include teasing by classmates and physical problems such as sleep apnea, researchers said.
