Sedation can put patients at ease and allow otherwise averse patients to receive needed dental care, but recent deaths have sparked calls for stricter regulation of the practice. Advocates want standards for training of dentists who use conscious or moderate sedation, permits and annual inspections to ensure adequate emergency equipment is available. Though some dentists prefer voluntary industry standards, others support enforceable national regulations.
