The Obama administration has proposed to boost the Department of Energy's budget by 2.3% in 2013, in part to help drive smart-grid projects focused on energy storage and transmission technology. The president's budget earmarks $27.2 billion for the DOE to support a range of initiatives, including the development of electric vehicle technology, research into advanced battery systems and improvements in a critical cybersecurity program. Among the more consumer-focused goals is a plan to deploy nearly 26 million smart meters by next year.
