The U.S. green-building industry is more likely to expand through building energy-management systems rather than net-zero buildings because the technology is easier to adopt, writes Korky Koroluk. The global market for building energy-management systems rose to $1.9 billion in 2011, and could reach $6 billion by 2020, according to Pike Research. The systems cost less than net-zero technology and are easily installed through retrofits, Koroluk notes.
