Some medical spas offer dermal fillers, ultrasound body sculpting and other treatments performed by technicians who have received inadequate medical training and who do not work under a doctor's supervision. The FDA has received reports of injuries sustained "in settings other than health clinics or doctors offices," the agency said. "A lot of people assume that the person treating them in a white coat is a physician, and they don't ask," said dermatologist Matthew Avram, director of the dermatology laser center at Massachusetts General Hospital. Dermatologist Jeffrey Dover said laser and cosmetic treatments should be performed by doctors and those employed by medical practices.
