Airlines are looking to harness growing amounts of aircraft, maintenance and passenger data to improve reliability and reduce costs, a demand that is fueling the creation of new data management systems from IT vendors. New database management platforms such as SAP's Hana seek to integrate large amounts of numerical performance data with written, unstructured data from pilots and mechanics in real time. "You have to enrich, correct and transform this unstructured data, and you must do it instantly, before the aircraft lands," said Willem Gouws of SAP.
