Dr. Geoffrey Hartzler, the interventional cardiology pioneer who performed the first coronary angioplasty at the Mayo Clinic in 1979, passed away March 10 after battling cancer. "He paved the way for generations of invasive and interventional cardiologists, teaching them to be courageous and innovative in the face of challenges," a SCAI news release said of Hartzler’s work. SCAI President Dr. Christopher White paid tribute to Hartzler: "He was a great person, a true visionary and an extraordinary physician. We will miss him."
