A study in Diabetes Care revealed that compared with carbonated water, drinking a diet soda before a glucose load resulted in 43% higher glucagon-like peptide 1 secretion in those with type 1 diabetes and a 34% increase in healthy controls, while the same effect was not seen in those with type 2 diabetes. However, the researchers said it is unclear whether the findings have clinically relevant consequences, such as increased satiety or slowed gastric emptying.
