Students at an Indiana junior high school are using math skills and engineering software to design and build models of mini-golf courses and playgrounds -- both virtually and physically. The hands-on project is part of Project Lead the Way, a nine-week program designed to boost students' interest in science, technology, engineering and math.

The proposal calls for integrating lessons in "life-environment" -- which focus on hands-on activities -- in preschool and kindergarten, and possibly introducing language study as early as preschool.
Purdue University's Space Day event draws students from five states by exposing them to careers in aerospace technology and introducing them to astronauts. Students also get to engage in hands-on activities related to science, technology, engineering and math during the annual event. "We provide a way for children to receive extra enrichment. They get the exposure to what it's like to be an engineer," said Megan Bergman, director of public relations on Space Day's executive board.
Educators at Moorhead Community Education's Early Childhood Family Education program in Minnesota say introducing preschool students to basic math and science concepts through play can provide a good foundation for kindergarten. The center offers classes for children as young as 2 years old in which they learn about counting, sorting, math games and more. "Math and science particularly lend themselves to those activities because they are so hands-on and concrete," center director Lauri Winterfeldt said.
